France Bike and Barge 2013

Photo Albums

Here are the photo chronicles of our 2013 trip to Provence and Paris. We were invited along by friends who had coordinated the Netherlands Bike-n-Barge trip in 2012, so we knew it was going to be fun.

As usual, I took a TON of photos, so I've split them up into separate albums so you can view a limited set if you wish. The two full photo albums (one for Provence and one for Paris) are split up by Day, so you can go to a specific day, or once in the album you can continue through sequentially.

Technical note: If you wish to copy a photo, you can simply right click on any photo and "save as" to a location on your computer. These will only be medium-quality image files. If you want a high-quality copy, note the photo file name above the image and send me an e-mail and I will send you a copy of the photo.

Click on the Photo to go to that photo album.

Highlights - Here are the highlight photos. These are just a few special shots to whet your appetite to see more photos. I've put a link on each photo caption that will take you to that photo in the main album so you can explore the surroundings.

People - Some folks only want to see the photos with people in them. I get complaints that I don't take enough of these (or rather, I take to many photos without people in them). So, this album is just the "people shots". Each of these will appear in the main albums as well.

Our Bike and Barge Itinerary
This is the trip itinerary, with overnight barge locations indicated by the white circles. The first day is a loop ride out of Villenueve-les-Avignon (our barge location), just across the river from Avignon. The dotted line on Day 4 is a barge ride to Gallacian. The last day was a loop ride out of Aigues-Mortes.

Provence Album - Trip Day 0 - Our arrival in Villenueve-les-Avignon, and exploring the area by foot. Includes medieval tower, fortress, and stunning views of the Palace of the Popes in Avignon.
Provence Album - Trip Day 1 - Villenueve-les-Avignon Loop Ride, with a wine tour stop in Chateaunuef-du-Pape, and cycling back to Villenueve, ending with an evening walk to the Palace of the Popes.

Provence Album - Trip Day 4 -Arles to Gallacian. The morning is spent tracking down Van Gough sites in Arles, a short bike ride, then a barge cruise to our overnight mooring.
Provence Album - Trip Day 5 - Gallacian to Aigues Mortes. This day bring us to the marshlands of the Camargue, including a ferry ride, and a visit to the seaside town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (they are plural).

Paris Album - Trip Day 7 - Transfer to Paris - We had a bus tour from the airport to the hotel, and then a brief exploratory walk around the hotel area (near the Eiffel Tower).

Paris Album - Trip Day 8 - The group spilt up a little, and four of us walked the Seine River down to the D'Orsay museum, then over to Notre Dame, and up to Sacre Couer. The evening ended with a boat tour on the Seine.
Paris Album - Trip Day 9 - Barbara and I lit out on our own today, visiting the Art Nouveau residential area, then the area around the Latin Quarter and Sainte Germaine. The day, and the trip, ended with a night-time ride up the Eiffel Tower.
